Andrew B

Full-stack Developer
I’ve been doing this for a while: as of 2020 I’ve been in the business of software development for a quarter century. I’ve worked with startups, government departments, banks, corporate consulting firms, design agencies, crisis consultants, retail chains, theatre companies, and individuals. I am an experienced, self-directed developer, but I also have a background in the arts and an MA in English Literature. I’m good at looking at the bigger business / conceptual picture while also figuring out little technical details. When I’m not coding, I create nerdy photo mashups of iconic science fiction characters and ships with equally iconic Nova Scotian scenery. This started as a one off joke, but it went viral and I now have hundreds of different images on my “starshipsstarthere.ca” site, I’ve been featured on TV, radio, online, and in print, and I sell posters, calendars, prints, and t-shirts at fan events - I am now slightly “Halifamous”. Turns out I really enjoy selling my own products to fans in person. Last but not least, I’m also an award-winning speaker who has spoken and keynoted at conferences across North America.

The Best Fit

I have often been the one technical person in an organization, translating big picture context into detailed technical solutions. I enjoy autonomy and being a jack-of-all-trades - but I also enjoy working as part of an established team, as every organization has its own different technical approaches and culture, and it’s fascinating to learn them. I’m at my best working in a self-guided manner on all aspects of a project, from UX to database structure, from figuring out the best wording for the website to API integration. I really enjoy collaborative creative projects, such as the ongoing work I’m doing with Zuppa Theatre on the NowHere platform - but I’m also not afraid to do a deep dive to fix deep technical problems. I’m often at my most effective fixing projects that were poorly done or abandoned by previous teams. It’s always a pleasure to be making things cleaner and better and more useful - and the tight scope is sometimes refreshing.
